Q: What drives you to find the solution to a complicated idea?
A: I have a love (perhaps obsession) to find a way to make anything better. So if a complicated idea presents itself, I look for a way to break the idea into individual, simple pieces. My favorite part of any workday is when I am presented with a complicated request, and I get to dream up the many paths that could be taken to arrive at a final solution.
Q: Are there any complex issues that are “too big to solve?”
A: Having a background as a developer / engineer / architect, I like to believe just about anything is within the realm of possibility. I enjoy when someone says that something isn’t possible. That’s when I get to dream.
Q: What do you find most satisfying when finding a solution?
A: Definitely finding the simplest, most elegant approach that contains the fewest number of steps to complete the task. This is also generally the approach that will run the most efficiently.
Q: So you have a lot of “trinkets” on your desk. Explain yourself.
A: There’s a story behind most of the items. Some are fairly simple stories, like the Ken Griffey Jr. bobblehead—my family went to a Reds game and most everyone in attendance received one. So what else do you do with a Ken Griffey Jr. bobblehead besides bring it to work?
Q: Where do you see the future of email marketing going?
A: It’s definitely going to be more and more targeted, so the end-user receives ads specific to their behavior. I think there will be advances in predictive engines that figure out to a higher degree of certainty what products a person will soon be purchasing.
